In Phippsburg, Maine’s historic Parker Head neighborhood, the 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom Sam Day Hill House sits perched above the Kennebec Estuary. The moment we saw the wrap-around porch atop the long, winding driveway we knew we’d found our fairytale home. Screened in the spring and summer, the teak porch is a haven for birding, reading, or simply watching the tides roll in and out of the Mill Pond below.

Less than an hour from Portland and 20 minutes from Bath, the Sam Day Hill House is a peaceful retreat close to many Maine gems (Popham Beach State Park, the Maine Maritime Museum, Morse Mountain, Fort Popham, Reid State Park…) We hope you love our Phippsburg hideaway as much as we do.

  • Maine's Best Beaches

    Few beaches in New England have the vast, desert feel of Popham Beach and Seawall Beach at low tide. Though a State Park with bathrooms, Popham Beach is also a wild place where a river drastically changes the beach when storms rage. Forty minutes away Reid State Park is another ruggedly beautiful beach. While summer brings many visitors and full parking lots to the state parks, the off-season brings solitude to these grand stretches of sand where you sometimes see more seals than humans.

  • Birding on the Kennebec Estuary

    Paradise For The Birds

    Winter, spring, summer and fall, the birds love the Kennebec River Estuary, and we love watching them from the wrap-around porch at the Sam Day Hill House. Bald Eagles hang out in the trees, Great Blue Herons stalk the marsh, Osprey fly by at sunrise and sunset. Unidentifiable duck butts are a common sighting. Buffleheads, warblers, plovers, egrets, kingfishers… it’s a seasonal bird parade. Bring your binoculars! We have field guides inside. Phippsburg’s trails and beaches make birders out of all of us.

    DownEast Magazine once described Phippsburg and neighboring Georgetown as “more Maine than Maine.” Is it the “Welcome to Phippsburg” sign on a propped up wooden dingy?
