Summer is the most popular, most expensive time to vacation on the Maine coast. And while it’s true that summer in Maine is pure gold, the off-season at Popham Beach is pure magic. Rainbows, seals, dramatic skies, no bugs, ice skating on Center Pond, walking along the frozen marsh, quiet trails, empty beaches. The wood-fired saunas at the mouth of the Kennebec River are reason enough to visit in the fall, winter, or spring (Cedar Grove Saunas set up at Spinney’s October through May.)
